Evolution of CALL in Language Learning

Computer-Assisted Language Learning was not suddenly developed in its modern form. Rather, it has been developed gradually with advancements in technology. In the first phase, which is identified as Behavioristic CALL, the process of learning concentrated on repeating tasks, like grammar practice, vocabulary, and other similar computer-assisted programs.

The next approach was Communicative CALL, which focused on communication through language and not for the sake of memorization. The students would solve problems and play word games while applying the use of language meaningfully.

Today, apps are operating under the paradigm of Integrative CALL, and multimedia and internet technology are fully integrated into apps. In this paradigm, learners engage in videos, podcasting, online forums, and virtual classrooms. The above shows that apps nowadays facilitate communicative and authentic use of language, and apps are no longer limited to rules of language.
